The Rollers and DYS Projects won the opening day games in the U14 division of the 2014 BANMI Youth League last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

The Rollers were paired against the Tinian Ol’Aces and notched a lopsided 55-15 victory in the first game, while DYS Projects outclassed the Ol’Aces in the second match, 21-16.

It was a come-from-behind victory for DYS, as it trailed in the first three quarters before finding its target in the fourth to steal the win. DYS scored 13 points in the fourth canto, surpassing its combined output in the first three periods. Chevy Kate Alipio led the fourth-quarter fight back, drilling all her 7 points in the payoff frame.

The fourth canto started with DYS behind, 8-16, as it tallied only 2 point each in the first and second cantos and 4 in the third. The Ol’Aces registered 4 points apiece in the first two frames and added 8 more in the third before failing to hit the board in the final canto to allow DYS to recover.

Andrew Litusquen top-scored for DYS with his 8 points, while Gregorio Sablan and Donavid Ada recorded 4 apiece to pace the Ol’Aces.

In the other U14 game, the Rollers took control of its match against the Tinian Ol’Aces right at the buzzer en route to the 40-point win.

The Rollers posted an early double-digit spread, 12-2, behind the 6 points of Chioni Dela Cruz. The Tinian Ol’Aces were held to 2 points off Joshua Hofscheider’s pair of free throws and the visiting team never scored in twin digits in the last three quarters to absorb a big loss in their debut.

While the Tinian Ol’Aces bled for points, the Rollers had little problems on offense, as it had multiple players scoring in each quarter. Eight players made it to the board for the Rollers with Jude Tengco and Dela Cruz leading the team with 8 points each. Jerome Reyes was the top scorer for Tinian Ol’Aces with his 5 markers.

Meanwhile, in the lone U21 match last Wednesday, Dream Team outshone Star Magic, 79-59.

Dream Team broke the game wide open in the third period, turning a 35-23 halftime lead to a 59-33 margin to have an impressive debut in the eight-team division. The trio Dixon Kwon, Richard Ada, and Leonard Sablan teamed up in the breakaway combining for 19 of their 24 points in the third period. Kwon scored 7 points, while Ada and Sablan chipped in 7 apiece.

Ada kept going in the fourth period, adding 8 more markers to finish the match with a team-high 16 points. Kwon also had double figures with his 15, while Sablan and Jason Palacios contributed 11 and 12, respectively, to give Dream Team a good start.

Dick David paced Star Magic with his 19 points, but was held to two field goals in the fourth quarter where his team failed to make enough headway to cut the deficit to a decent number.
