A total 53 riders answered the challenge of the recently concluded “What The Hell” bicycle race held, which started and ended across the Marianas Resort & Spa in Marpi.

The one-day race is a prelude to the 2014 Hell of the Marianas Century Cycle in December. It will be the eighth edition of the annual event, which is considered to be the toughest race in Micronesia.

All 53 cyclists completed at least one lap with Charlie Sendin, Nap Dizon, female rider Athena Andrews, and 14-year-old Wynn Brillo among the notable riders that took on the race that was divided into three speeds.

Sendin and Dizon finished the five laps in under six hours, while Andrews had four laps in the mountain bike division. Brillo went four laps in under six hours in the road bike category.

Noel Altamirano, John Arceo, Mark Isip, and Edwin Palaganas were the other riders who completed four laps in the mountain bike category.

The mountain bike course took riders from the road across the Marianas Resort then headed toward the Far East Broadcasting Corp. tower, passed Grotto-Autobahn going to Calavera Cave, the radar before turning right at the blue tank that will take them down to Binadu and at the starting line.

The race was divided into three speeds: Ludicrous where you will be challenged to complete four laps in under six hours; Ridiculous, a three-lap leg of under six hours, and the Light Speed with a minimum of two laps.

The $10 on the $20 entry fee went to the Hell of the Marianas prize money pot. (Jon Perez)
