The Geckos are the back-to-back champions in the league as they beat GCA two years in a row and they aim to extend the streak and win their third straight title.
Besides the SIS-Southern tiff, five other matches will be played in the opening day of the MISO boys volleyball competition. The SIS’ junior varsity (JV) team will take on Southern’s varsity squad at 4:15pm at the north side of the court, while Marianas High School (MHS) will host Mt. Carmel School (MCS) in the varsity division with the game to be played simultaneously at the south court.
The SSHS Manta Rays’ JV crew will then face the Kagman High School (KHS) Ayuyus’ varsity side at 5:15pm at the north court while the varsity teams of Marianas Baptist Academy (MBA) and Grace Christian Academy (GCA) will play at the south court.
Opening day action ends at 6pm with the SIS Geckos’ varsity team battling the MHS Dolphins’ JV squad, while SSHS’ JV team collides with MHS varsity.
Action continues on Oct. 2, Thursday, with MCS facing SIS in an all varsity clash, while SIS takes on MHS in an all JV meeting at 4:15pm.
Other featured matches are GCA-KHS (varsity) and SSHS-MBA (varsity) at 5:15pm and KHS (varsity) against SIS (JV), and MHS versus SSHS in the JV division.
The boys’ division games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Meanwhile, the girls’ basketball season starts on Oct. 1 with games to be played every Mondays and Wednesdays.
MISO director of operations Nick Gross has yet to release the final schedule in the girls’ basketball tournament. He is also hopeful that Tinian and Rota schools can join the tournament.
The new MISO season will be divided into varsity (from grades 9 to 12) and junior varsity (from grades 9 to 10) divisions.
A 12-player line-up in the varsity and 15-player JV roster will be implemented in the league. The deadline for submission of team line-ups and other eligibility requirements is on Sept. 19. (Jon Perez)
