Obama declares disaster for Halong recovery
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) announced Friday that President Barack Obama has issued a federal disaster declaration for Guam to assist with recovery efforts from tropical storm Halong. The disaster declaration follows a request from Gov. Eddie Calvo to help defray costs to the Government of Guam for response efforts to tropical storm Halong.
The disaster declaration helps to release federal funds for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Public assistance will be used for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities. Hazard mitigation will be used for actions taken to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property from natural hazards.
“I applaud President Obama for issuing a federal disaster declaration for Guam,” said Bordallo. “This declaration will free up federal funds to assist GovGuam with recovery efforts following tropical storm Halong. Guam was fortunate to have been spared any major devastation. This disaster declaration demonstrates the Obama Administration’s concern for the people of Guam’s needs in addressing the aftermath of tropical storm Halong.”
