Saipan will be hosting the fourth leg of the Asia Flow Series of Sept. 26 and 27 with Bridge Capital teaming up with PIC Saipan once again to help the region’s best riders get to the finals in Thailand.

“We have riders who train all year for this event,” tournament director Glenn Policare said.

These include 2013 men’s flowboard champion Dan Westfall and runner-up Keoni Ichihara, who will represent Saipan at the Series Finals to be held on Oct. 3 and 4 in Bangkok. Last year’s men’s pro bodyboard champion Ray Babauta and 2013 men’s open bodyboard runner-up Francis Hartman will be waving the flag for Saipan as teams from Japan and Korea will be coming to qualify for the series finals as well. The series final event, which rotates from location to location each year, decides who will represent Asia at the Flowrider World Championships.

“Not only has the competition become fiercer over the years, the riding has gotten much more technical.” Spectators can expect to see rodeos, lazy 3s, kickflips, shuvits, backside AL’s, fast plants and a laundry list of other tricks being performed at the highest levels,” Policare added.

Dale Roberts, 3x Flowrider judge, says it is the combination of tricks, which makes a rider a champion. “Combinations displayed with power and flow always score high in my book. We all like to see a wide variety of tricks. The international cache of riders always bring their A game.” Roberts said.

Jody Jordahl, chief operating officer for Bridge Capital, LLC, said that they are excited to be a part of this upcoming event.

“Bridge Capital, LLC is pleased to continue the tradition of working with Pacific Island Club, and to be a sponsor for the upcoming Asia Flow Tour Competition. We remain committed to supporting events that give people in our local community a chance to compete internationally and represent the CNMI.”

Competitors will be practicing from 6pm to 8pm this week and next. Competition on Sept. 26 starts at 5pm. The public is welcome to watch the event for free. For more information, contact Policare at 237-5148 or glenn.policare@picsaipan.com. (Saipan Tribune)
