COTA: Over 4K riders in 7 months
The Commonwealth Office on Transit Authority has reached 4,179 riders in the past seven months alone, according to COTA special assistant for public transportation Thomas Camacho.
According to Camacho, the number of riders has increased due to the demand for public transportation in the CNMI. “This shows the importance of public transportation is for the community,” he said.
Camacho said that they maintain ridership data, keeping track on how many people are riding every month for the whole year.
The latest data covers the period from January to July.
The highest month COTA served for public transportation was in May, which reached 774 riders, compared to the month before, a 200-some increase in riders.
Majority of the people seeking transportation are residential customers, where riders seek transportation returning home. Second is public assistance for persons with disabilities, while third is for work and medical needs.
In related news, COTA has cancelled its election of new officers for the Commonwealth Public Transportation Advisory Board due to some of the members not showing up.
According to Camacho, the CPTAB had 11 members, but three months ago, the number was reduced to six members, and yesterday, Sept. 12, was there first meeting and supposedly election of officers.
Camacho said they will hold their next meeting on Rota.
