MCS to use new tool to improve student literacy
Mount Carmel School faculty, staff, and administrators recently participated in a training seminar for a new online tool that will be used to improve student literacy. The tool, Achieve3000, is a cloud-based suite of interactive readings, formative assessments, and other resources that promote differentiated instruction and interdisciplinary reading for all grade levels. Facilitated by one of Achieve3000’s Curriculum and Implementation managers, Michelle Poleyumptewa, M.Ed., the training introduced school personnel to the many features available both online and offline.
“This tool will go a long way toward helping our students learn functional literacy that will stick more,” said school president Galvin Deleon Guerrero. “What makes Achieve 3000 great is that it cuts across the curriculum into all subjects, thus making it clear that all teachers are responsible for literacy, not just English teachers.”
Fifth-grade teacher HeJin Lee is very excited about using Achieve3000. Lee said, “Students will be able to learn and read a wider variety of books. I look forward to using it, especially because it has many different and appropriate reading levels for students.”
In addition to teachers and students, once fully implemented, parents will also be able to use the tool to interface with teachers and monitor their children’s performance. That feature of Achieve3000 will strengthen the partnership between teachers, students, and parents in order to enhance student literacy.
The school’s use of Achieve3000 is made possible by support from the CNMI Public School System and its Title I program, which funded both the training and the site license. Now that training has been completed, students’ data will be uploaded to the Achieve3000 site so that teachers can begin assigning subject-specific and age-appropriate reading work for students.
According to Achieve3000’s website, the company “serves more than one million students across America.” The company’s site also notes, “Achieve3000 is leading the way toward helping every student become independent, reaching higher standards, and becoming prepared for college and the workforce.” (MCS)
