Acting governor Jude U. Hofschneider signed a local law on Friday amending the Saipan Zoning Law of 2013 to allow funeral homes or crematorium in Chalan Kanoa.

Hofschneider signed Rep. Ray Tebuteb’s (Ind-Saipan) House Local Bill 18-55 into Saipan Local Law 18-20, amending the Saipan Zoning Law of 2013 to include funeral homes as a conditional use in “village commercial zoning district.”

The Borja Funeral Homes, currently in Oleai, is proposing to move to the former Carmen’s Baby News Store in Chalan Kanoa. The plan is to build a funeral home or crematorium at the new location.

Hofschneider also appointed Ignacio Pangelinan Kiyoshi on Friday to serve on the Commonwealth Development Authority board of directors representing Tinian.

Kiyoshi’s appointment requires the Senate’s advice and consent. If confirmed, he will serve a four-year term beginning on the date of his confirmation.

“The governor and I are confident that Mr. Kiyoshi is qualified and will be an asset on this important board,” Hofschneider said in a letter to Senate President Ralph Torres (R-Saipan).

The acting governor, meanwhile, told Saipan Tribune that he is still reviewing the bill raising the cigarette tax.
