UOG’s Center for Island Sustainability program debuts at Inarajan Middle School

INARAJAN, Guma-The University of Guam’s Center for Island Sustainability (CIS) debuted its Island Sustainability Awareness Program (ISAP) at Inarajan Middle School yesterday.
ISAP, created by CIS Energy Technician Francisco Palacios, aims to educate students about sustainability issues from an island perspective. “We need to increase awareness about sustainability on island and we are also trying to promote energy literacy for our students,” Palacios says.
The program was created to educate middle and high school students about sustainability issues. The program lasts for up to one week for middle school students and two weeks for high school students.
The students will receive information about several issues such as the definition of island sustainability, the disadvantages of the community’s dependence on fossil fuel, energy conservation and energy auditing, as well as information on renewable and alternative energy sources. Palacios, accompanied by some of the UOG Green interns, will give presentations, show videos, and provide hands-on examples regarding these topics.
“This type of education is very important because we live in a time where energy resources and cost are real issues for our island. This program raises student awareness about such matters and shows them how to take simple steps to conserve energy and become environmental stewards for the island,” said Palacios.
Aside from Sept. 12, ISAP will also present at Inarajan Middle School on Sept. 14 and 16 from 8:40am to 2:45pm. (UOG)
