Respicio to election commission: Protect in-office ballots
Guam Sen. Rory J. Respicio sent a follow‐up letter to the Guam Election Commission (GEC) requesting that they provide an update on its procedures to ensure that the in‐office ballots for the upcoming election are protected and tamper‐proof.
Respicio is the chairman of the Committee on Rules; Federal, Foreign & Micronesian Affairs; Human & Natural Resources; and Election Reform. He wrote a letter on Aug. 4, 2014 to GEC executive director Maria Pangelinan expressing his concerns, and requesting an update on the commissionʹs procedures regarding the in‐office ballots.
Respicio sent a follow up letter this morning requesting Pangelinan to respond to his concerns as chairman with oversight on Guam elections.
“I am sure you share my concerns that we have to assure the public that the election process remains free and fair, as a result of the considerable amount of controversy relative to the security and sanctity of the ballots surrounding the 2010 General Election,” Respicio said. “Specifically, the almost 4,000 early voting or in‐office ballots remain questionable, as even post audits conducted by GEC revealed that there were no internal controls to securing these ballots, as well as GEC’s inability to account for how many ballots were actually printed for the 2010 General Election.” In the letter, Respicio noted, “I continue to express my sincere concern that all election laws be followed and that that
there is proper accountability in this process.” (PR)
