SANTA RITA, Guam—Sailors from U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) and its tenant commands are volunteering to help Marcial A. Sablan Elementary School get ready for the upcoming school year during “Fix Up” day scheduled for 7 a.m.-noon, Aug. 16.

“This is a great opportunity for our Sailors to reach out to our sister school, help in a meaningful way, and give back to a community that has welcomed us with such great hospitality,” said Capt. Andy Anderson, Naval Base Guam commanding officer.

In recent weeks, dozens of Sailors have volunteered their time to help public schools throughout the island prepare for the new school year slated to start Aug. 18. About 20 Sailors from commands including NBG, Coastal Riverine Group 1 Detachment Guam, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5, are volunteering their time to paint, rake and water blast at the Agat school this weekend.

Principal Geraldine Pablo said she appreciates the support military members have extended to the local community and that the Sailors offer “tremendous help” as the school gears up to welcome back its students.

“I feel that having the military community come out to support our school is a great way for them to be able to participate in the island community,” Pablo said. “Many military personnel are here on island far from their homes so this will be a great opportunity for individuals to meet new people and form friendships. We are truly grateful to the military for being a positive impact for our students, our school, and the island.” (PR)
