Doubles matches highlight Day 5 of Shirley’s tourney

Day 5 action in the 2014 Shirley’s Badminton Classic was dominated by doubles matches with 12 team games out of the 16 taking place last Saturday at the TSL Sports Complex.

In the men’s doubles 35-and-above division, the pair of Cris Hilario and Patrick Fernandez went 2-0, winning both games via sweeps. They first defeated Celso Agui and Sato San, 21-17, 21-15, before topping Ariel Mariano and Ray Musada, 21-12, 21-16. In the third men’s 35-and-above tiff, Oh Im Bog and Young Son Yu battled back from an opening game loss to down Panapa Peteru and Joel Ortega, 17-21, 21-14, 21-11.

In the women’s doubles 35-and-above division,, Elna Curate and Roxe Lazaro and Loyda Ito and Gigi Zapanta recorded wins in similar fashions. Curate and Lazaro took only two games to prevail against Cristy Villaflor and Judy Mendieta, 21-18, 21-11, and Ito and Zapanta also notched straight game victory over Annette Ta and Vilma Reyes, 21-17, 21-18.

Ito also played in the women’s B doubles event and she teamed up with Shirley Kim in beating Merlie Tolentino and Lani Santos, 21-16, 21-10. In the other women’s B doubles division, Nicole Malasarte and Patricia Abantao also made short work of Ta and Elma Labuson, 21-20, 21-17. Malasarte and Abantao partnered, too, in Class C and triumphed over Reyes and Baby Banadera, 21-14, 21-18.

In the women’s A doubles, the youthful pair of Jen Savellano and Janine Pangilinan swept Windy Fernandez and Lani Bartolome, 21-16, 21-13. In the men’s division, Andreau Galvez and Deether Edralin also downed Jordan Pangilinan and Ezekiel Macario after only two games, 21-9, 21-15, while Sam Jones and Glenn Bluutjens eased past Macoi Aguda and Shintaro, 21-17, 21-13. The third men’s A doubles tiff in Day 5 went the distance with Ferie Arago and Aries Cordero outclassing Young Son and Jongmin Lee, 20-21, 21-19, 21-19.

In the two other men’s doubles matches, Edwin Montoya and Ortega slipped past Jojo Savellano and Noli Santos in Class B, 16-21, 21-15, 21-16, while Ariel Jinang and Musada dominated Jun Banadera and Noel Florento in Class C, 21-13, 21-14.

Meanwhile, in the men’s A singles, Galvez escaped with a scary 21-20, 21-20 win over Jordan Pangilinan, while Cordero and Shintaro notched separate wins in Class B. Cordero was paired against John Cano and won in straight games, 21-17, 21-13, while Shintaro cruised past Montoya, 21-10, 21-19. In the women’s B singles, Dianne Francisco won via forfeiture against Toshiko Obata.
