Members of the Associated Students of Northern Marianas College will choose new officers this school year in an election that will be held later this month.

The college’s two-day election will be on Sept. 26 and 27 and hundreds of students are expected to participate.

Thursday was the deadline for the nomination of candidates; their names will be disclosed on Sept. 14. There are four positions up for grabs: president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer.

Winning candidates will be sworn in during an investiture ceremony on Sept. 29.

Antonio Tiples is the current president of the student organization.

In accordance with NMC’s constitution, ASNMC aims to prepare students to take their places as responsible citizens by providing educational, social, recreational, and cultural experiences. It also aims to promote unity of purpose and fellowship among students as well as to serve as the focus and unifying force of all student activities and to support campus organizations.

ASNMC also develops individual leadership qualities by encouraging participation in college and community governance and student organizations as well as provide for the welfare of students.

ASNMC officers actively participate in the planning of major college events, including Charter Day, NMC’s largest annual event. They also organize forums that include debates among political candidates seeking public office.

ASNMC officers are also members of the college’s governance structure. It also has representatives on the Board of Regents, college council, the planning, program review, and outcomes assessment committee, the budget and finance committee, the recruitment team, graduation committee, and other groups.

The Board of Regents recently backed a measure that recommends giving voting rights to student representatives on the board. If enacted into law, this will increase the current voting members from seven to eight.

Two other individuals-the presidents of the faculty senate and staff senate-also serve as honorary board members, with no right to vote.
