Peace Corps swearing in ceremony

U.S. Peace Corps Country Director Robert Reid performed the formal swearing in of 18 new Peace Corps volunteers on Aug. 12 at the Tuna Commission in Kolonia.

The volunteers will be assigned to elementary schools in all four of the FSM states. Nine volunteers are headed to Yap State and its outer islands, three to Pohnpei, three to Kosrae, and three to the Mortlock Islands in Chuuk State.

The primary mission of these two-year volunteers will be to work as co-teachers and co-planners in the Peace Corps Teaching English as a Second Language project. When requested, they will assist their school principals to write school improvement plans, which are a high priority for the departments of education in each state. In addition, each Peace Corps volunteer will use her/his skills to work on secondary activities in their schools and communities.

Volunteers in the past have worked on school infrastructure projects, community gardens, youth camps, disaster risk reduction, sports, libraries, arts, and music. (U.S. Embassy Kolonia)
