MILE CNMI, a new group of young voters dedicated to promoting political awareness and voter registration among the youth, have scheduled meetings with the gubernatorial candidates.
During their meeting Friday at the American Memorial Park, the group finalized their schedule as well as made further plans for voter registration drives in the community.

MILE CNMI is scheduled to meet Gov. Eloy Inos today at his campaign headquarters in Gualo Rai.

According to group organizer Irene Tantiado, Inos will address the group during the meeting, with a question-and-answer session following.

On Thursday, the group will meet with Heinz Hofschneider at his campaign office, and the following week, they will meet with former governor Juan Babauta.

MILE CNMI, whose acronym stands for “Maximum Impact Leading Excellence” discussed their role in the community during their last meeting. Consensus was found on whether the group was a political one or a group for the community.

They decided that they were a community group and added beach cleanups to voter registration drives and political education campaigns on their to-do list.

The group is running an informal poll on their MILE CNMI Facebook page to gauge the amount of interest for candidates among the voters they interact with.

Carlo Ocaya, who became a member of the group on Friday, said he heard about the group meeting from his mom.

“I’m hoping to bring a voice, and be a person who can be active and help people out,” he said.

He said that as a U.S. citizen, getting his voice heard might help many of his friends who are in a “difficult situation.”

One issue that was previously discussed in the group’s meetings concerned children of guest workers whose parents had to leave the Commonwealth because their uncertain immigration status left them unable to stay on island.
