FBI expert certified to testify at Crisostomo’s trial

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on Friday certified as an expert Federal Bureau of Investigation physical scientist/forensic examiner Linda M. Otterstatter to testify on hair and fiber evidence in connection with the upcoming jury trial of murder suspect Joseph A. Crisostomo.
Camacho also declared on Friday IT&E manager for network services James Calderwood as custodian of record so he can testify on phone records.
A Daubert hearing will continue tomorrow, Tuesday, with Lara Adams, another FBI forensic examiner, to testify via Skype regarding hair and fiber evidence. Otterstatter and Adams both work at the FBI laboratory division in Quantico, Virginia.
A Daubert hearing is a proceeding held before trial to determine whether a proposed expert meets the requirements.
Assistant attorneys general Margo Brown and Chemere McField appeared for the Commonwealth at the hearing. Attorney Janet H. King represented Crisostomo.
Crisostomo faces charges of kidnapping and killing bartender Emerita Romero, whose body was found in the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque on Feb. 7, 2012. The jury trial will start on April 7, 2014.
The government intends to introduce at trial evidence of testing and analysis of hair and fiber and mitochondrial DNA evidence.
