MISO triathlon season kicks off tomorrow
The Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization is partnering with Tri Saipan to introduce endurance sports to its growing list of sporting events offered to local students. This Saturday marks the first multisport challenge on the student schedule, as aspiring triathletes meet for a three-stage event in Susupe.
Race headquarters is the FilCom pavilion and registration opens at 5:30am, while the event gets underway at 6:30am. The inaugural race features a run-swim-run format. Competitors will run from the pavilion along the beach pathway to the Microl Toyota intersection and back before transitioning to the swim course. Once in the water, the racers will swim out to the first World War II-era Sherman Tank in the Saipan lagoon and back before heading out to the final run leg. When they return to the run course, the athletes will proceed north to the Quartermaster intersection where they will turn around at the Japanese tank and head back to the finish line at the pavilion.
As per the MISO rules, all participants must not have any “F’s” on most recent grading period and must have a minimum 2.25GPA. All participants must have a current sports physical (Aug 1 of the year in question) and a MISO parental waiver form signed and submitted. All participants must also be able to get themselves to and from all events.
Organizers anticipate school teams (both men’s and women’s) of four members to be eligible for the team trophy at the end of the season, while individual awards will be available as well.
After the first leg, MISO and Tri Saipan are expected two have the bike-swim-bike format before eventually doing the swim-bike-run races at the conclusion of the inaugural triathlon season.
