UOG students experience Korean culture

Fifteen University of Guam students can now say with certainty that the Chonbuk National University winter “Feeling Korea” program was aptly named. Along with the cold winter weather, the students felt the culture and history of South Korea during their one-week stay on the Chonbuk National University campus from Jan. 12 to 18, 2014. Organized and funded by the UOG Professional and International Programs office, the 15 participants earned the International Experience Scholarship, which provided funding for their travel to Korea.

The students completed a total of 30 hours of instruction, which included 15 hours of Korean language and 15 hours of cultural activities including cooking bibimbap, performing the art of pansori, and learning about the traditional hanbok clothing. During free time, students were able to explore the city of Jeonju—right across the street from the campus gate—and visit local restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Also participating in the program were students from Japan, China, and the Philippines.

“Our students thoroughly enjoyed the weeklong experience and making connections with international students,” said Carlos Taitano, PIP associate director, who accompanied the students to Korea.

One goal of the PIP office is to develop international experiences and opportunities for UOG students. “This program allows our university students to travel, expand their worldviews, and participate in cultural exchanges,” said Cathleen Moore-Linn, PIP director.

Chonbuk National University is just one of several international institutions that partner with UOG. CBNU currently has 48 students participating in the PIP English Adventure Program at UOG.

“We continue to strengthen and increase our partnerships with universities in the Asia-Pacific, including institutions in China, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan to increase educational opportunities for our students,” said Moore-Linn.

“When it came time for the closing ceremony, it was hard to say goodbye to all of the new friends we made,” said Kyru Cabading, UOG student and participant. “We not only had a chance to embark on an exciting international adventure, but also create friendships and share the unique spirit and liveliness of people from Guam.”
