Castro leads Saipan finishers in Tour of Guam

Seven Saipan bikers completed last Sunday’s 2014 Tour of Guam with 15-year-old Erico Castro leading the island’s finishers in the 105-kilometer race.
Castro checked in at the 3:29:22 to finish sixth in the open division and 10th overall among nearly 100 riders in the annual race that started and ended at the Ada’s Trust Capitol building in Hagatna and brought runners to the southern and central roads of Guam. His Top 10 finish (both in his division and overall ranking) allowed him to bounce back from a misfortune in last month’s Hell of the Marianas Century Race. The youth biker crashed around the last 25K of the 100K race.
Castro was one of the three Saipan bikers to make it to the finish line under the four-hour mark. Fellow youth biker Jerome Diyco and veteran biker Butch Sublemente were the two others with the former timing in at 3:35:29 and the latter submitting 3:43:53. Diyco also joined the open division won by Korean Kaon Cho (3:08:29) and the Saipan bet finished ninth in his category, ahead of eight others.
Sublemente entered the 40 to 49 age group and took the No. 6 spot behind former Saipan biker Lewie Tenorio (3:19:46), Arthur Guerrero (3:39:25), Rick Leone (3:29:33) Nike Inoue (3:30:16), and Manny Masculino (3:36:59).
Two Saipan bikers joined then 40 to 49 age group with Ben Babauta and Allen Perez finishing at the No. 19 and No. 21 spots, respectively Babauta clocked in at 4:27:29, while Perez logged 4:42:54. Thirty riders were entered in the 40 to 49 age group, the category that drew the most participants.
In the U19 division, Saipan’s Gerald Rangamar clinched first place after recording 4:49:18 and defeating Guam’s Ricchan Lin, who tallied 4:51:06.
In the women’s division, Susan Marchitti joined the 50 to 59 age group and finished ahead of the open division’s third placer. Marchitti registered 4:43:40, posting a better time than open division No. 3 finisher Tomoko Okada, who completed the race in 4:45:11. Former Saipan pro Mieko Carey ruled the women’s field with her time of 3:20:04 (seventh overall), while Guam’s Mylene Garcia came in at second after clocking in at 4:17:07.
