A group of biologists surveying a site on the Water Cave road on Rota found a dead fruit bat last Thursday, Jan. 9.

The federally protected species was found hanging from a tree on the southern part of the island. Biologists on the scene also reported finding 15 fresh shell casings from a .22 caliber firearm.

According to a local official, the Water Cave road is actively used by poachers to kill fruit bats. This source said, “What is being currently monitored by the local law enforcement is inadequate. We need more security in that area.”

CNMI DFW investigator Erwin Flores was called to the scene the same day to investigate. (Thomas A. Manglona II)
