Public warned of high surf today

The CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management issued a high surf advisory yesterday, warning of hazardous surf that is projected to last until 6am today, Thursday.
“Fresh to occasionally strong winds associated with a shear line combined with a north swell generated by a cold front east of Japan will create conditions hazardous to small craft through [last] night. A large north swell combined with swell and waves generated by a shear line over the far Northern Marianas will continue to generate hazardous surf on north facing reefs of the Marianas,’ the advisory states.
The high surf advisory and small craft advisory remain in effect until 6am today.
“A large north and northeast swell across the Northern Marianas was projected to produce hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet along north facing shores of Saipan and Tinian through last night. Surf heights…should drop below hazardous levels by Thursday morning,” the advisory adds.
The advisory cautions the general public and inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, to avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution, especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening. [I](PR)[/I]
