Soroptimist International of Mariana Islands will be organizing a truffle-making class on Monday, Jan. 13, from 6pm to 8pm at a still unnamed venue.

Hyatt Regency Saipan pastry sous chef Shawn Sweeney has volunteered to teach members of the group the intricacies of candy making in time for next month’s celebration of Valentine’s Day.

According to the local Soroptimist International group’s newsletter, the class will entail truffles, including some ways to change flavors by adding other ingredients.

Sweeney will also be providing recipes that would allow members to make truffles at home. Participants also get to take home a small box of truffles to enjoy.

The truffle-making class is limited to 20 participants and children are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent if under age 12.

The venue for the class will be decided at a meeting today at the 2nd floor conference room of the Family Building, where Xerox and the Saipan Chamber of Commerce are located.

In related news, the group’s president Jill Arenovski said they would announce the winner of their Women’s Opportunity Awards before the month ends.

The Women’s Opportunity Awards are open to women who want to improve their job skills through education and training.

The award may be used to offset any costs associated with efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, and transportation.

Soroptimist International is a global women’s organization whose members volunteer to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
