In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Pacific Islands Club Saipan is upping the ante for its 2014 PIC Duck Race for Cancer, set for Feb. 8 at the San Antonio landmark’s Lazy River.

According to Duck Race director Glenn Policare, PIC Saipan is pledging $2,500 in cash to the first rubber duck out of 2,500 total to cross the finish line on race day.

Cash prizes will also be awarded to the second, third, and fourth place ducks. In addition, PIC Saipan will be awarding $250 cash and a PIC Room Stay Package to the owner of the 25th duck to cross the finish line.

“This event started back in 2009 and has been growing each and every year. Last year we sold 2,000 ducks. Our target is 2,500 this year. I know it is a high task, but after living here on Saipan for as long as I have and to see the outpouring of generosity by the wonderful people here for so many causes, I know we can reach our goal,” said Policare.

Proceeds from the 2014 PIC Duck Race for Cancer will once again be donated to the Commonwealth Cancer Association.

All in all, PIC Saipan has donated more than $30,000 to CCA since the event’s inception, Policare said. CCA uses the funds to help those fighting cancer here in the CNMI and to help raise awareness so future generations can live cancer-free.

In addition to the rubber duck race, PIC Saipan will also be hosting The Race Around the River, also known as the Human Duck Race. A total of 24 swimmers will swim one lap around the PIC Saipan Lazy River. Outfitted with beak, caps, goggles, fins, and lifejackets, the participants will be vying for bragging rights and a great team building award.

“That has got to be one of my favorite parts of the day, “said assistant race director and statistician Dennis Tababa. “To see 24 people in yellow swim camps with duck beaks and lifejackets swimming around the river just to help those in need is a great moment.”

PIC employees are out selling duck tickets from now until race day. The Sports, Entertainment and Activities staff will be selling ducks at the Garapan Street Market Jan. 30 and Feb. 6. Tickets are only $5 each. For more information about the Duck Race or the Race Around the River, contact Policare or Tababa at 237-5147.
