Ex-convict allegedly slams girlfriend’s head against wall
An ex-convict was arrested again Thursday, this time for allegedly repeatedly slapping his girlfriend and slamming her head against a wall as she was holding their 2-month-old baby at their apartment in Tanapag. The infant was hurt when the power cord line of an electric fan hit the baby’s shoulder.
Sidney Capelle Kani, 32, was arrested for assault and battery, criminal mischief, and disturbing the peace.
Police said the girlfriend’s lip was swollen and the right side of her face had scratches.
The infant was taken to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment of a bruise and scratches on the left shoulder.
Bail was set at $10,000 cash for Kani’s temporary release.
Police detective Isapen Boluku stated in her report that Kani’s girlfriend, their 1-year-old daughter, and a 2-month-old baby were sleeping when Kani arrived about Thursday midnight, allegedly in a foul mood.
He yelled at his girlfriend and allegedly punched an electric fan, causing it to fall to the floor. He folded a blanket and allegedly threw it twice at her face. He allegedly grabbed the fan and slammed it down on the floor. He also threw a TV set and DVD player on the floor and yelled profanities at her.
The couple’s 1-year-old daughter was awakened by the noise and started crying. Kani slammed the fan on the floor four or five more times, causing the power cord line to ricochet and hit the left shoulder of the infant, who was in a crib.
As the girlfriend tried to comfort the baby, who was then crying, Kani walked over to his girlfriend, allegedly pulled her hair, and slapped her face several times. He also allegedly grabbed her hair and hit her head against the wall four to five times as she was holding the infant.
The girlfriend’s mother, who was sleeping inside her bedroom in the adjacent apartment unit, was awakened by the noise and told Kani to stop. Kani allegedly yelled at her to go back to her room and pushed her.
The girlfriend said she has no idea why Kani, who has not gone home since Dec. 31, 2013, was behaving like that.
In July 2008, Kani was arrested for allegedly beating up his girlfriend and three other persons in As Matuis. In December 2007, police arrested Kani for allegedly beating up his then minor girlfriend at their apartment in Tanapag.
It was not immediately clear whether she was the same victim in all those three domestic violence cases.
In July 2000, Kani pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of interference with commerce by robbery in connection with two robbery cases at a poker arcade and a store. He was sentenced to prison.
