MCS expands search for annual distinguished graduate awardee
Mount Carmel School’s search for the recipient of its distinguished graduate award will be expanded beginning this year to include former students who spent at least some years at the school.
This was announced yesterday by Mount Carmel School president Galvin Deleon Guerrero, who also revealed the renaming of the prestigious award to “AlumKnight of the Year.” Nominations will be opened to AlumKnights who spent at least four consecutive years at the institution.
According to Deleon Guerrero, this change will help honor many AlumKnights who, for very legitimate reasons, had to transfer to other schools.
“In some cases AlumKnights spent over a decade at the school but had to transfer before graduation for family emergencies. Those AlumKnights, however, are still very loyal to their alma mater,” he said.
“We have this saying: Once a Knight, always a Knight. Changing the award in this way will make that saying more meaningful to the entire AlumKnight family,” Deleon Guerrero added.
Besides expanding the pool of nominees, the announcement of the award is being moved from the school’s annual Family Night to a new tradition at the school, the annual Night with the Knights fundraising banquet, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, to conclude the school’s celebration of 2014 Catholic Schools Week.
All members of the community are invited to submit nominations for AlumKnight of the Year. The school’s Leadership Team and past awardees will screen nominees and select an awardee based on that AlumKnight’s lifelong fulfillment of the school’s mission and philosophy.
Since 1998, Mount Carmel School has given the award to individuals who have distinguished themselves as leaders in business, government, and the community and who represent the institution’s trademark values of faith, excellence, and success.
The deadline for AlumKnight of the Year nominations is on Jan. 17. To submit a nomination, or for more information, email the school’s director of institutional development, John Blanco, at johnsblanco@gmail.com, or Deleon Guerrero at galvin.deleonguerrero@gmail.com.
