Marianas Eye Institute’s Dr. Edward Godnig conducted the screening with technician Vanessa Kisa, certified ophthalmic medical  assistant Emily Taitano, and Taitano’s daughter, Rita, who volunteered as she aspires to pursue a career in the same field.

Kisa and Taitano checked the man’amko’s blood pressure and blood sugar levels first before they were examined by Godnig.

Marianas Eye Institute staffers will continue with the free vision screening at the center today.

Taitano said in an interview that their outreach for the island’s elderly is part of the community service of Marianas Eye Institute, which has also been going to public schools since the opening of classes to provide free eye checkup to students.

“It’s a good feeling knowing that we are able to reach out to the man’amko,” Taitano told Saipan Tribune. “I know there’s a lot of them who need to get their eyes checked but are not able to because of lack of transportation and other problems so we’re happy to provide this service to them.”

Client Maxi Mereb said she needs to get her vision checked to know if she is using the right reading glasses. “I’m happy that they’re here to help the man’amko,” said Mereb, who is a patient of Marianas Eye Institute’s Dr. David Khorram.

Alejandra Blas said she needs to see a doctor because she wants to change her eyeglasses, which she has been using for over five years. “Maybe I cannot see well with these glasses. Thank you Marianas Eye for coming here to help the man’amko.”

At 82, Pedro Dela Cruz said he still drives at night without eyeglasses but believes he has to get his eyes checked. “With the Marianas Eye visit, I don’t have to go to their clinic to see if there’s anything wrong with my eyes.”

Saipan Seniors Advisory Council chair Teresita Sorroza expressed “a big thank you” to the Marianas Eye Institute. “Eyes are very precious so the community service provided by Marianas Institute allowed those man’amko who can’t go to their clinic to have their eyes checked here,” she added.
