Palau college and Fiji university collaborate on nursing program

Palau Community College held an opening ceremony on Oct. 31, 2013, for the Fiji National University’s Public Health Nursing Program. Present at the ceremony were the prospective nursing students, PCC president Dr. Patrick U. Tellei, PCC nursing instructor Illoi Rabuka, Pacific Islands Health Officers’ Association member Dr. Gregory Dever, and the retired nurses of Palau.
The ceremony began with a spiritual moment followed by a brief introduction about the program provided by Rabuka. She was followed by a special address given by Tellei, who emphasized the importance of the program, especially for islands with medical forces dwindling in numbers. Dever, who spoke on behalf of the PIHOA and Palau’s Ministry of Health, shared how the nursing program was enticing interest around the Pacific region. This interest was prompting other learning institutes across the region to consider similar collaborations.
The bachelor’s segree for Public Health Nursing Program is a result of collaborated efforts between Palau Community College, Palau’s Ministry of Health, and the Fiji National University.
Palau Community College agreed to host the program in Palau by providing the facilities. Fiji National University will be the main source of learning material and information. Through both learning institutes, the nurses currently working in Palau may pursue a bachelor’s degree without having to attend an off-island institution. Interested nurses must have an associate degree in nursing in order to participate in the program. [B][I](PCC)[/I][/B]
