The Saipan Mayor’s Office wants to get a portion of the fees paid when obtaining a marriage license to cover administrative costs, which are “not funded by the general fund.”

The office, which is authorized to grant marriage licenses, is also mandated to preserve records of marriage and send a copy of the issued marriage certificate to the clerk of courts of the CNMI Superior Court.

These mandates add to the cost related to the administrative processing of a marriage license, the Mayor’s Office stated in its report submitted to the Legislature.

“As the cost related to the processing of a marriage application, preserving of record and providing a copy of a certificate to the Superior Court are solely the Office of the Mayor of Saipan’s, we request that the Legislature consider appropriating a sum from the total collection to the Office of the Mayor of Saipan,” the report said.

From January 2011 to August 2011, the mayor’s office received 158 applications but it filed a total of 168 applications, including those from the governor’s office.

The mayor’s office received $11,260 from these marriage application and marriage certificate fees.

The month of May posted the highest in fee collection, with $1,400 collected from marriage application fees and $560 in marriage certificate fees.
