The Senate and the House of Representatives believe the entry of GTA Services, LLC to the local telecommunications industry will result in lower rates and better services.
In a letter to Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission chair Viola Alepuyo, Senate President Paul A. Manglona (Ind-Rota) said he fully supports the Guam-based company’s entry to the CNMI telecoms market.
“So long as GTA supplies and maintains quality telecommunications on all Commonwealth islands, it has the Senate’s full support,” he said.
Manglona added that by creating an open market and competition between telecommunication carriers, “better services and more affordable prices will passed on to consumers.”
He said further proof of the upper chamber’s support of GTA is its passage of Senate Resolution 17-51 in May 2011, expressing its full support of GTA Services.
House Speaker Eli D. Cabrera (R-Saipan) said he welcomes any new business that comes into the CNMI, especially if it will create competition and ultimately lower rates.
“It’s always good to have more competition and it will bring down rates. We welcome GTA’s entry to the islands telecoms industry,” he said.
The Fitial administration seconded Manglona and Cabrera’s comments about GTA joining IT&E, Docomo Pacific, and iConnect in the local telecoms industry.
“The administration welcomes all new meaningful investments into the CNMI. The priority of the administration is economic development and the creation of more job opportunities for our people. While we are not privy to GTA’s rates for its services, we certainly welcome the idea that our people will have additional options when it comes to telecommunications services. Obviously, during these trying times, our people should be afforded the opportunity to seek more affordable goods and services,” said press secretary Angel Demapan in an email.
