Sweeps in mixed doubles A tourney

Week 3 of the IT&E Singles & Mixed Doubles Badminton Tournament 2012 concluded last Sunday with teams in the tough mixed doubles A division recording victories via sweeps at the NMBA Gym at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai.

First to post a straight games win were Saul Gargallo and Lucelle Lampera, who defeated Jerry Hibi and Toshiko Obata, 21-19, 21-18. Next on the list were Hapi Gabriel and Hannai Choi, who topped Dick Guintu and Malou Malasarte, 21-15, 21-14.

Gabriel and Choi attempted for a second straight win last Sunday, but Ferdie Arago and Lani Bartolome frustrated them with a 21-15, 21-18 triumph.

The fourth and last sweep in the mixed doubles A belonged to Andreau Galvez and Angie Ito, who edged Rodwealth Espana and Shirley Kim, 21-18. 21-17.

In the mixed doubles B, four of the five matches played last Sunday were won after only two games. Oh Imbog and Toshiko Obata swept Celso Agui and Loyda Ito, 21-9, 21-7, and Jeff Riman and Annette Quiambao, 21-7, 21-13; Joel and Alma Ortega downed Agui and Ito, 22-20, 21-19; and Wowie Abuel ad Jane Tupas beat the Ortegas, 21-19, 21-14.

Jerry Tan and Shirley Kim won the lone three-game match in the mixed doubles B, defeating Roger Vales and Babes Cielo, 11-21, 21-18, 24-22.

The Ortegas also played in the mixed doubles C and needed three games to thwart Rommel Bartolome and Jane Tupas, 15-21, 21-14, 21-13. Bernard Aquino and Christina Ta also battled Bartolome and Tupas in an extended game with the first pair winning, 28-26, 20-22, 21-12.

The other game in the mixed doubles C had Ramir Belialba and Irish Pagarao prevailing over Son Jae Ok and Fen Luan Li, 23-21, 21-10.

In the women’s C singles play, Midori Obi booked back-to-back wins last Sunday, thumping Lani Santos, 21-13, 21-10, and Rose Lazaro, 19-21, 21-11, 21-13. However, Pagarao broke Obi’s streak with a 27-25, 25-23 victory, while Roma Barlao went 2-0 with her wins against Santos, 21-4, 21-9, and Pagarao, 21-13, 21-10.

Also nailing two victories last Sunday was Angie Ito, who showed no love lost for her mother, Loyda, 21-16, 21-17, before sweeping Malasarte, 21-16, 21-10.

In the men’s B singles, all three matches ended after only two games with Oh, Espana, and Chris Hilaro on the winning end.

Meanwhile, eight of the nine matches in the singles last Saturday were decided after only two games, while in the mixed doubles A, Sam Jones and Loyda Ito and Galvez and Angie Ito went the distance before escaping past separate foes. In the mixed doubles C, five pairs swept their opponents.
