Commonwealth Ports Authority’s Capt. Juan Rebuenog is this year’s Top Gun champion while his CPA team defended its title in the team category.

Rebuenog bested 14 other participants from different law enforcement agencies during the joint federal and local law enforcement’s annual Top Gun competition held yesterday at the Department of Public Safety’s shooting range in San Juan.

CPA’s main team—composed of Rebuenog, Capt. Joe Palacios, and police officers Manny Degracia and Jason Cruz—emerged champion again by defeating five other teams. CPA fielded a second team.

Police officer Rhonda John was the only participant in the individual female competition.

In the individual category using s .9mm pistol, Rebuenog grabbed first place with his 56:97 time. Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Anthony Mareham came second with 54:63 time.

As the time was too close, organizers decided to have another round between the two. Rebuenog remained steady by registering a time of 55:97, while Mareham dropped to 59:97, allowing Rebuenog to grab the title.

In the four-member team competition, Rebuenog joined the defending champion CPA team to defeat five other teams with a time of 3 minutes and 10 seconds.

The DPS team was second with a time of 3 minutes and 53 seconds.

In the team competition, the participants fired a rifle, a shotgun, a submachine gun, and a .9 mm pistol.

It is CPA’s sixth year in a row to win the plum since the Top Gun competition was launched in February 2006. There was no competition last year.

Police officer Jason Tarkong and police officer 2 David Hosono said they eliminated firearm instructors from joining this year’s competition to encourage more participants. Tarkong and Hosono are both certified firearm instructors.

The FBI did not join this year because some of the agents are certified firearm instructors. Immigration and Customs Enforcement fielded two agents in the individual competition.

Rebuenog received a trophy, while CPA kept the perpetual trophy and bragging rights.
