NMC’s English Language Institute prepares student for the Big Apple
Over the years the Northern Marianas College’s English Language Institute has assisted scores of students to develop skills to communicate effectively using the English language. For student Bin Lu, her time at NMC not only helped her to learn English but also to pursue her academic goals in New York City.
Almost two years ago the Fujian province native left China for the first time mainly to learn English at the Northern Marianas College.
“At that time, I couldn’t speak any English and my grammar was terrible,” said Lu. “When I started learning English, I made many mistakes. Fortunately, my English instructors Mr. Barry Wicksman, Mrs. Lek Algaier, Mr. Bruce Johnson and Mr. Michael Nurmi were very patient and helped me so much.”
The NMC Language and Humanities Department, through the English Language Institute, offers comprehensive instruction to assist individuals improve their English communication skills.
“Her experience at NMC helped lay the foundation of her confidence in her English speaking skills,” said Wicksman, Lu’s English instructor and mentor. “In our island community we are very welcoming, and so you get more of a nurturing and open environment at NMC.”
Lu now reports that her communication skills have improved greatly. “I can speak, write, and listen at the college level.”
Lu added, “NMC is a nice school because it has many excellent instructors and a multi-cultural environment. I was able to make many friends from other cultures.”
Wicksman noted that Lu’s exposure to people of different cultures will “help her in the long run.”
Lu’s ultimate goal is to return to China and work for an international company. This fall she plans to attend Baruch College in New York City to work toward a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, and hopes to one day earn her master’s degree in business.
She chose to continue her studies at Baruch College “because they have a great business program.” Baruch College is a nationally ranked postsecondary institution known for its business degree programs. Its campus is located near Wall Street and the headquarters of many major companies.
“If I didn’t come to NMC I would never have gotten a chance to get to Baruch,” said Lu. “This has been a positive experience for me both academically and personally.”
“We are very proud of Lu Bin and have high hopes for her,” said James Kline, Language and Humanities Department chairperson. “We are also very proud to have played a part in her success and wish her the best with her future plans.” (NMC)
