‘Detectives not abandoning the Romero investigation’
Police detectives are not abandoning the investigation into the murder of bartender Emerita Relata Romero, according to the chief of the Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.
Police Capt. Lawrence Camacho in an interview last week assured the public and the family of Romero that they are still working on the case.
“We have not abandoned it,” said Camacho, who refused to elaborate.
Saturday marked the third month when Romero was last seen alive after boarding a car in Garapan. Her body was found by FBI agents at the northernmost building of the former La Fiesta Mall in San Roque in the afternoon of Feb. 7.
When asked if the results of the FBI laboratory’s examination are already out, the CIB chief said he can’t comment as investigation is still ongoing.
Former DPS commissioner Ramon Mafnas earlier disclosed that forensic examinations and assessments on all evidence are being performed on-island and off-island, saying the results can only strengthen the government’s case.
Mafnas removed Camacho from CIB and assigned him to the DPS Training Section after the two had a confrontation during a briefing in the Romero case.
Just days after Mafnas was put on administrative leave as DPS commissioner, acting DPS commissioner Ambrosio Ogumoro reinstated Camacho to CIB.
