Youth Summer caging tips off June 1
The Unified Basketball Association is gearing up for the third edition of its Summer Youth Basketball League, which is scheduled to start on June 1 at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Its first series started back in 2009, headlined as the Docomo Pacific Summer Youth League and the event took a pause in 2010 mainly because of that year’s Micronesian Games.
UBA organizer James Lee was—and still is—a member of the CNMI national basketball team that competed in quadrennial competition, which was held in Palau. The league picked back up this past year and Lee is eager to get things going again.
“This league has always been strictly for the youth. It gives them something to do during their summer break, which is why we’re try our best to keep the entrance fee and other expenses for the teams as low as possible,” said Lee in an email.
He also shared news that the UBA is partnering this year with Rollers Basketball Club.
The RBC is fielding two of its squads (U15A and U14B) to take part for the first time ever in the Philippines in the upcoming 2012 Manila-Pacific Rim Goodwill Games slated from July 23 to July 30. Thus, a portion of the funds generated will be donated to the youngsters.
Following the opener, games will run the next day and continue from thereon weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Monday and Wednesday dates will hold one game per night with double features set over the weekend, however the schedules per division have not been finalized.
The league will consist of a U17 and a U25 division and will utilize a round robin format, but the playoff format will depend on the turnout.
The entrance fee to participate is $100 per team; uniforms are optional but teammates must at least suit up in the same colors. If teams do not have uniforms, color code sleeves will be provided during games.
The required roster and waiver forms can be obtained at Safety 1st System on Middle Road in Gualo Rai or at the Garapan Community Guidance Center next to the basketball court.
The deadline to submit roster and entrance fee(s) is May 25.
