The United Filipino Organization will kick off its 2012 UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League on May 12 at the newly renovated Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

UFO president Bong Malasarte said they were forced to postpone the start of the league, which originally was set to start last Sunday, April 29, to give participating teams more time to complete their lineups as well as await delivery of their uniforms.

So far, Malasarte said 21 teams have signed up for the competition—seven in the 40-and-over division, four on the 21-39 division, six in the 15-20 division, and four in the 14-and-under age group.

Expected to see action in the 40-and-over age group are MDX/Armatech, Bayani/Triple J, Samahang Laguna, UPAA, Boholano, Batangas Blades/Fong’s Bakery, and Visminda/Island Rent A Car.

MDC/Civic Boys, Bayani/Mobil, MIFICPA/Proa, and MAFEA/Konflikt, meanwhile, will be squaring off in the 21-39 division.

The 15-20 age group will have MDX/Mariana Resort & Spa, SIP, Bayani/DYS Jr. National A, Visminda/AON Jr. National B, MIFICPA Gene’s Barber, and Power/Hi Five, while suiting up for the 14-and-under division are players from MDX/Armatech, SMF, Boholano/Wings, and San Vicente.

Ali’i Konflikt is the defending champion in the 21-39 division after it ambushed a previously undefeated Proa team bannered by CNMI national players in the one-game finals, 94-79, last year.

In the 40-and-above division, MDX/Armatech returns to the fold as reigning champion. It beat 2010 champion Cabalen/Wings Travel, 84-79, in the finals last year. Meanwhile, in the 15 to 20 division, the Jets defeated Filcag in the finals, 86-80, in the age group’s first year.

This year’s UFO games will be played every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. For more information, contact Bong Malasarte at 287-5525, Manalili at 483-4337, Boy Ching at 287-6046, or Abner Venus at 888-7764.
