Thousands of Catholic faithful in the CNMI are expected to reflect on Christ’s death today in observance of Good Friday.

Good Friday is part of the Holy Week celebration, which begins with Palm Sunday that commemorates Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.

On Saipan, the trek to Mt. Tapochao, the highest point on the island, has become part of the Good Friday tradition.

The annual pilgrimage is highlighted by the carrying of a wooden cross to the peak of Mt. Tapochao by a group of male devotees, to commemorate Christ’s passion.

Several organizations have already set up their tents along the trek path as early as Thursday night to assist hikers by providing them with refreshments.

Yesterday, which was Maundy or Holy Thursday, Catholic churches portrayed the washing of the feet of the 12 apostles.

The weeklong Catholic celebration will culminate on Easter Sunday, which honors Christ’s resurrection.
