The qualifying competitions for the 2012 PSS/McDonald’s All Schools Championship started last Monday with over 150 students trooping the Oleai Sports Complex.

“We had a big turnout on the first day even though we only had four schools. On Tuesday (yesterday), we expect an even bigger turnout as there will be 11 schools joining the qualifiers,” meet director Elias Rangamar said.

“The registration area was long as students started coming at 3pm. We’re happy that the invited schools brought a lot of students despite the challenges with transportation and break,” Rangamar added.

Day 1 of the series of qualifying events were for students from Saipan Community School, Dandan Elementary School, Gregorio T. Camacho, and William S. Reyes.

The trials started at 4pm with the 60m run for the boys U8, U10, and U12 age group. Also scheduled at the same time was the long jump for the girls U8, U10, and U12.

Next up were the 60m qualifying races for the girls U8, U10, and U12, and the long jump for the boys in the same age group.

There were also qualifying runs in the 100m for both girls and boys U8, U10, and U12 age group, while the last event of the day was the 4x100m relay for both girls and boys in the same age group.

Only the students making the Top 8 best records after the six-weeklong qualifiers will advance to the championship scheduled from May 17 to 19.

The qualifiers will be held from Monday to Wednesday with the first two days of the week reserved for elementary students and the third for high school and junior high athletes.

Other events set in the qualifiers are the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1,500m runs, 4x400m relay, javelin, softball throw, mixed medley relay, and shotput.

Carmel, San Vicente, Tanapag, and Garapan, while tomorrow, it will be the turn of Marianas High School, Kagman, Saipan Southern, SIS, Whispering Palms, Chacha, Hopwood Junior High School, SCS, Marianas Baptist Academy, and Northern Marianas Academy bets.
