Officers and members of the United Filipino Organization are are now ready for the annual trek to Mt. Tapochao on April 6 in observance of Good Friday.

Bong Malasarte, president of the umbrella organization of some 30 Filipino groups in the CNMI, and UFO adviser Olive Yana separately confirmed yesterday that the group will be at their designated site on Mt. Tapochao by late Thursday afternoon to put up their tent.

Malasarte said they will be handing out boiled eggs, congee, sandwiches, water, and coffee to the hundreds of pilgrims that are expected to trek up the mountain to commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

“The assistance that we provide every year during the hike to Mt. Tapochao on Good Friday is our small way of giving back to the community and this is also through the generous donation of our sponsors,” he told Saipan Tribune.

Malasarte said the event is also an opportunity for UFO members to get together as Good Friday is one of the observed legal holidays in the CNMI.

“Usually, we would see more of our members, particularly those who can’t make it to our regular meetings because of their responsibilities at work,” he added.

Malasarte encouraged all their officers and members to take part in their activity and, at the same time, reflect on the real message of the Lenten season.

“We hope that the entire UFO will become involved in our efforts to serve the community in this holy season and also mark the occasion by repenting for our sins and asking forgiveness from God,” he said.

Malasarte also thanked their members who stepped up as volunteers for the 4th Settsu-Saipan Friendship Tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday.
