Marianas Tourism Education Council and the Marianas Visitors Authority kicked off their annual visits to junior and senior high schools this month with a stop at Saipan Southern High School.

MTEC met with student leaders on March 19, 2012, to educate them on the importance of tourism and check in on what the students have done to support tourism over the last year.

“We visited Saipan Southern High last year, and we were very pleased to see the students have a greater awareness of the tourism industry and our major tourism markets,” said MTEC chair Vicky Benavente. “Even more importantly, the students were able to share a number of actions they’ve taken personally since our last visit to support tourism.”

Students listed everything from being president of the newly formed SSHS Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically (MY WAVE) Club to inviting tourists to join their family barbecue.

“The students enjoyed the presentation, and I hope this would entice the students to join MY WAVE club next school year,” said SSHS MY WAVE advisor Arisa Sakai. “I believe the students should know more about the tourism industry for their future benefit.”

MTEC will continue its educational presentations this week. The council is a non-profit organization aimed at educating the public on the importance of the tourism industry. Membership is open to all interested individuals. (MVA)
