USCG Auxiliary Guam wins outstanding flotilla of the year

The local United States Coast Guard Auxiliary flotilla placed first in the District-wide competition for Outstanding Flotilla of the Year out of the 14 flotillas in Coast Guard District 14, which covers Hawaii, Guam, Saipan, and American Samoa.
The award is based on outstanding performance in all areas of the Auxiliary’s programs in 2011, which includes public education, vessel safety checks, marine dealer visits, and operations.
Flotilla Commander Jack Ary was on hand to accept the honor on behalf of Guam Flotilla 140-02-24 at the District awards banquet in Honolulu, Hawaii.
“The hard work and dedication of the membership as well as the capable and professional leadership of the active duty team Coast Guard in Guam made this possible,” said Ary. “It is important to also recognize the now fully independent Saipan Flotilla 140-2-02-29 who significantly contributed to and shares in the success of the Guam Flotilla for the competitive period.”
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the uniformed civilian all-volunteer component of Team Coast Guard assists the active duty Coast Guard in many of its varied missions. These men and women can be found on the nation’s waterways, in the air, in classrooms, and on the dock, performing Maritime Domain Awareness patrols, safety patrols, vessel safety checks and public education.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1939 by an Act of Congress as the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated the Auxiliary in 1941. Its over 32,000 members contribute millions of hours annually in support of Coast Guard missions.
