Basketball Association of Northern Mariana Islands had already sent out invitations to teams interested in competing in the 2012 Micronesian Basketball Confederation Western Division 17-and-Under Tournament.

The invitation letters were sent to basketball federations of Guam, Yap, and Palau last week. Rota and Tinian are also invited and BANMI is hoping to have a seven-team tournament for both the boys and girls divisions.

The MBT U17 caging will be played from May 21 to 26 at the renovated Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium. Invited federations can send more than one team in the boys and girls division, as Saipan, being the host, is expected to fields two squads in each category.

Interested teams have until March 30 to submit a letter of intention to participate, while filled-up team entry forms and the $250 bond must be paid by April 9. Copy of the preliminary roster is due on April 21, while the final lineup should be submitted by May 7.

“As always, air fares, food, lodging, and internal transportation are the responsibility of the participating teams. BANMI will try to help you arrange favorable hotel rates, as well as meals hosted by your communities here on Saipan,” BANMI secretary general Michael White said in an email sent to MBC members.

“On behalf of BANMI, we look forward to hearing from you, and to welcoming you to Saipan for the tournament,” he added.

The MBT U17 tournament is the second competition MBC will organize after the revival of the group in 2010 during the Micronesian Games in Palau. Last year, Palau hosted the MBT U15 tournament with Guam winning both the girls and women’s divisions. The CNMI placed second in the girls division and fourth in the boys.

Two months after the MBT U17, Guam will host the 2012 Micronesian Basketball Tourament, which is an open competition and will feature the national teams of MBC-member islands. The MBT in Guam will also have teams from the east region—Pohnpei, Marshall Islands, Chuuk, and Kosrae.
