The Japanese Society of Northern Marianas is inviting the community to take part in this year’s Japanese Autumn Festival scheduled for tomorrow.

Yoichi Matsumura of the Japanese Society said the event will start off with a peace ceremony at 10am at the Katori Jingu Shrine at the Sugar King Park in Garapan.

“We invite everyone to attend this meaningful ceremony to pray for the people of Japan and the CNMI,” he told Saipan Tribune.

Matsumura, who is also president of Pacific Development Inc., said that 25 guests from Chiba and Ibaraki Prefectures in Japan, including High Priest Rev. Shoji Takahashi, are expected to participate in the ceremony.

This year marks the 26th anniversary of the rebuilding of the Katori Jingu Shrine and the founding anniversary of the Japanese Society of Northern Marianas, a non-profit corporation.

The ceremony will be followed by the Autumn Festival celebration starting at 5pm at Paseo de Marianas.

This year’s festivities will feature cultural dance performances called Yosakoi and Bon Dance, Japanese game booths for Fukuniki or the Japanese raffle game, Kingyo-sukui or fish scooping, as well as various food stands that offer yakisoba, pizza, barbecue chicken, and a lot more.

Matsumura said they decided to change their venue and schedule for the festival this year. The Japanese Autumn Festival used to be held at the Round House across the Katori Jingu Shrine right after the ceremony.

“We want more people to be able to join us in celebrating the Japanese Autumn Festival until night time,” he said.

Matsumura urged the public to join them in celebrating Japanese culture by taking part in the Japanese Autumn Festival.
