Man charged with alleged possession of fruit bats

The Office of the Attorney General has filed charges against a 55-year-old man who was allegedly found in possession of two endangered Marianas fruit bats on Rota.

The OAG charged Juan Q. Inos with two counts of possession of an endangered and threatened species.

Inos, of San Antonio, Rota, was ordered to appear and answer the charges in the Superior Court on Saipan on March 12. If he fails to do so, he will be arrested.

According to chief prosecutor Peter Prestley in the charging document, on Jan. 15, 2012, on Rota, Inos knowingly and willingly violated the law by possessing Marianas fruit bats (Pteropus mariannus), locally known as fanihi.

The offense is punishable by imprisonment of not more than six months, a fine of not more than $5,000, or both. No other details were provided in the charging information.
