Tinian man gets 6 months for ‘ice’ possession
A Tinian resident facing “ice” trafficking charges has pleaded guilty to possession of controlled substance and was sentenced to six months in prison.
In a hearing on Tinian last week, Superior Court associate judge Kenneth Govendo accepted Kurt King’s guilty plea and sentenced him to two years, all suspended except for six months, with credit for the seven days he has already spent in jail.
The 31-year-old King will start serving his sentence on March 15, 2012.
After completing his prison term, King will be placed on probation for two years. He was ordered to pay a $100 fine, and all court costs, and probation fees.
King agreed to testify at any trial involving his co-defendant, Byron Dela Cruz.
The Office of the Attorney General had charged King with trafficking of a controlled substance, illegal possession of a controlled substance, and conspiracy to commit trafficking of a controlled substance.
According to the plea agreement, King was caught in possession of crystal methamphetamine on March 25, 2010, on Tinian.
Members of the CNMI’s joint Drug Enforcement Task Force arrested King and Dela Cruz in April 2010 after a “cooperating source” allegedly managed to buy $100 worth of “ice” from the two.
