The Northern Marianas College confirmed yesterday that it had submitted its 2013 budget request on the date it was due to the Governor’s Office.

In a statement, NMC said it was incorrectly reported Thursday that NMC was one of the agencies that had failed to meet the Feb. 29, 2012 submission deadline.

The Northern Marianas College Board of Regents had voted earlier to adopt NMC’s 2013 Appropriations Budget Request in the amount of $8 million.

The board also voted to include a separate budget request of $1.5 million for the Apprenticeship Program.

“For more than 30 years, the Northern Marianas College has played a central, critical role in the CNMI by helping residents advance academically and professionally,” said Juan T. Lizama, chairman of the Board of Regents. “The budget request that we are transmitting to the Governor’s Office and the Legislature ensures that the college continues to serve in this very important capacity.”

“The amount we are requesting represents the bare bones minimum to ensure that the college maintains the high quality of instruction and student services it provides to its students,” said Lizama. “Equally important, it will allow the college to meet accreditation standards and requirements.”

The $8 million will be used primarily to fund personnel salaries and benefits for faculty and staff. It will also be used to pay for utility expenses.

“It’s important to note that the budget we are requesting represents an average amount that our peer institutions have received in state support in terms of per student allocation,” said NMC president Sharon Y. Hart.

Earlier, the college reported that a peer comparison study found that legislative funding for NMC is significantly less when compared to the amount spent by many other states and peer institutions on a per-student basis; national and regional data also supports this finding.

The requested amount also ensures that NMC meets maintenance-of-effort requirements from certain federal grants. (NMC)
