Don’t let the team name fool you. Aim Low aspired for the highest honor in the 2011 Rocball Fall League and went on to win the championship against the Teachers yesterday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Aim Low wrapped up the best-of-five title series after a juiced-out victory in Game 4, 34-24. The newly crowned champion took the last two games in the series and prevailed in Game 1, while the Teacher’s won only once (Game 2).

Playing for Aim Low were J.R. Gechig, Riden Fiden, A.J, Aguilar, and Y.J. Nakayama. Gechig, who had a so-so performance in Games 2 and 3, came out swinging in the title-clinching Game 4, scoring 12 points. Gechig had four aces and two kees, while Fiden continued his consistency in the last three games of the series, chipping in six points off one kee, one ace, and one xunk. Fiden nailed 10 points in Game 2 and contributed four in Game 3. Nakayama managed to score his second goal in the series, hitting the 3-pointer in the second set of Game 4. He had his first goal in Game 2 and was the only player in the field to make at least one goal in the title showdown.

Nick Gross led the Teachers’ losing cause with six points off three aces, while Tyce Mister and John Nekaifes chipped in four each. Mister made one kee and one ace, while Nekaifes logged two kees.

The Teachers boosted their chances of forcing a deciding Game 5 early on when they won the opening set of Game 4, 13-6. However, Aim Low behind the good service game of Gechig recovered quickly and took the second set, 14-5, for a 20-18 lead.

Then in the third set, Aim Low was still at it and cruised to a 14-6 victory to end the final series. Aim Low’s last two wins in the series were juiced-out triumphs. It won Game 2 by 10 points after three sets, 38-28, while in Game 1, Aim Low needed four sets to pull off a 46-38 win. The Teachers had a juiced-out victory in Game 2, 35-29.

Meanwhile, Rocball creator James Feger has been invited to attend the opening ceremony of the India National Rocball Tournament next year.
