Coast Guard hosts weekend for Sea Cadets

[B]APRA HARBOR, Guam[/B]—U.S. Naval Sea Cadets from the Marianas Division had the opportunity to be Coast Guardsmen for the weekend, learning about environmental stewardship and other Coast Guard missions.
The Sea Partners Campaign is a Coast Guard environmental education and outreach program focused on communities at large to develop community awareness of maritime pollution issues and to improve compliance with marine environmental protection laws and regulations.
“On the first day Sea Cadets learned about the effects of oil, hazardous chemicals, waste and debris on the marine environment” said Marine Science Technician 3rd Class Sarah Jacobs. “We also talked about ways groups and individuals can take action to protect the waterways around Guam.”
“After learning about environmental cleanups, taking action was exactly what we did,” she said.
The following day, Coast Guard members and Sea Cadets partnered to conduct a beach cleanup around the shores of Merizo pier. Together the group filled over 15 bags of trash and separated materials that could be recycled.
Throughout the weekend, Sea Cadets toured Station Apra Harbor, experiencing small boat station life. Cadets also climbed aboard Coast Guard Cutter Assateague and Sequoia to learn about each cutter’s unique and shared missions. All Coast Guard units on Guam share the responsibility of protecting the environment amongst a myriad of other missions including search and rescue and maritime security.
Since 1958, the Naval Sea Cadet Corps mission has been committed to providing American youth with a drug and alcohol free environment to foster their leadership abilities, broaden their horizons through hands-on training and guide them to becoming mature young adults.
