The Guam-based National Weather Service has issued a high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan that will remain in effect until 6pm Friday. A small craft advisory also remains in effect until 6pm Friday.

In both advisories issued yesterday, NWS is urging the public to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along east facing reefs as rip currents are life threatening.

NWS said a high pressure just north of the Marianas islands and strong winds on the south side of the high are creating large northeast swells. The swells will produce hazardous surf along east-facing exposures of the Marianas for the next few days.

NWS projects surf to be between 10 and 12 feet on east facing reefs through late Friday afternoon. Surf is expected to fall below hazardous levels by Friday evening.

Combined seas of 10 to 12 feet and winds of 20 to 25 knots with stronger gusts near showers are expected through Friday, producing conditions hazardous for small boat operations.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary exercise caution, especially near reef lines and while entering or leaving harbors and inlets.
