CNMI hosts beach volleyball Olympic qualifier
The CNMI hosted its first-ever Asian Volleyball Confederation Beach Volleyball Oceania Continental Sub Zonal tournament at Pacific Islands Club last March.
Host team CNMI competed against national representative teams from Australia, Guam, and Papau New Guinea.
Similar campaigns were held in the Eastern, Central, Southeastern and Western zones. These zones featured two sub zonal tourneys apiece, while Oceania held three.
The event was formatted with men and women’s squads competing in two-person teams.
In sub zonal play on Saipan, the CNMI’s Melody Matson and Amanda Clarkson defeated Papau New Guinea’s Dianne John and Hazel Ruga, 15-12, in a deciding golden set to finish second place behind Australia.
The result was good enough for the CNMI to earn passage to the zonal level of competition.
The CNMI men’s team faced some tough competition and were not so fortunate in their run.
Notably, Matson and Clarkson have since relocated, but the CNMI has patched together a new squad and is currently training with hopes of participating in 9 AVC Zonal event which will be held in New Zealand in 2012.
