Round 1 of the boys U18 division contest in the 2011 Saipan Soccer School Youth Futsal League was completed last week with the Thundercats and IT&E barging into the win column.

The Thundercats notched their first win in the double-round robin competition after a 3-0 triumph over Mean Machine at the TSL Sports Complex. The Thundercats and Mean Machine struggled offensively in the first 20 minutes of play before the former found their rhythm in the second half to shut out their foe.

Timothy Tawanpiy canned a pair of goals for the Thundercats, while Don Cabrera, who played goalie in the first half, concentrated on the team’s offense and scored one goal.

Also playing for the Thundecats are Greg Sakisat, Raphael Zapanta, Zhi Peng Lin, Yong Park, Joseph Ichihara, Daniel Agulto, Brian Lee, and Mark Huang. Steve McKagan coaches the Thundercats.

Before dueling Mean Machine, the Thundercats debuted in the league against IT&E and the match resulted in a draw, 2-2.

Lee tallied both goals for the Thundercats, hitting one each in the first and second half, while Jin Han Yoon and Dae Min Jeon logged one goal apiece for IT&E in the final 20 minutes of the match.

Also suiting up for IT&E are Yi Shan Wang, Greg Kim, Evert Van Der Maas, Jacob Choi, Joon Lee, Chris Park, Moon Bin Hong, Jehn Joyner, Joshia Borja, and Taek Han Yoon.

After the draw against the Thundercats, IT&E gained their first win via forfeiture against Mean Machine.

Only three teams are competing in the boys U18 division after one squad decided to pull out in the last minute. They will play six games with the team with the most wins after the double-round robin ruling the age group.

The second round started last Tuesday night with the Thundercats and IT&E squaring off anew. Results of the match were unavailable as of press time.

Meanwhile, Astig Futsal won the lone U17 game played so far, as it clobbered Go Green Team, 12-1.

Kyla Ito and Jeraldine Castillo recorded four goals each for Astig Futsal’s lopsided win. Melody Johnson added two, while Lily Williams and Maica Aniana contributed one apiece. Maria Castro was the only Go Green Team player to score a goal last week.

Go Green Team dropped to a 1-1-0 win-loss-draw record with its first win coming off forfeiture against the Ayuyus.

Astig Futsal and the Ayuyus were scheduled to collide last Thursday and the latter was also set to face Go Green Team last Tuesday. Results of the both matches were unavailable as of press time.
